I made this illustration for Ebony magazine a couple of months ago. I haven’t seen it yet, but have heard it’s out this month. It was a really great experience working with Lynnette Galloway, the magazine’s Associate Art Director.
You can probably guess what the story is about. I’m attaching some of my sketches as well.
Here are the thumbnails and sketches I submitted to the client for approval.
Originally I wanted to have simpler figures reflected in the binoculars, and thought it would be nice to channel the art of Kara Walker a bit -but I didn’t feel like these silhouettes told the right story.
The only thing I hate more than making changes is having a final result I am not pleased with. Originally, I thought it would be interesting to draw a “scene” in the binoculars, but as I was finishing up, I decided posed figures would be best.
I had a tough time deciding which color scheme I liked better, finally deciding on the simpler composition of blues and pinks on the left.
