Runner’s World

Hey guys,

The following illustrations ran as a feature in an issue of Runner’s World from a couple of months ago.

This was an interesting assignment, in that the story was completely changed early on in the sketching process. The feature was about a very steep race on Mount Washington. Mostly, the story focused on the psychological aspects of the race. I tried to get this to come through in the illustrations.

I always have fun drawing people running, for some reason, and this series was no different. I really enjoyed playing with the distortion in the opening image, and making the figures look hot and tired for the third piece. They’re a little bit corny, but I think it’s appropriate for the type of article it was.

Thanks for reading,

Frank

I agree–I don't think this is at all kitschy. The figures are really expressive and have a lot of character. These days I'm often reticent to try this kind of caricature in my figures, but you pulled it off nicely.

catching up on my past issues, i saw this a bit late. i've seen illustrations lately and thought they were your work and was wrong. this one however, i knew was yours. awesome work as always frank!
