Swimming With Sharks

I did this piece for the brilliant SooJin Buzelli at PlanAdvisor a while back. The topic: Risky Behavior. Size: 1/2 page spread.

PlanAdvisor and PlanSponsor are the two magazines I’ve worked with SooJin on. She ONLY uses illustration, and prefers the illustrative solutions to be more interpretive (read: NO BUSINESSMEN IN TIES!).

The result is that every issue she art directs looks like a miniature illustration annual. I don’t know where you can pick up an issue, but if you get a chance, it’s something you should buy. She gets really gorgeous work out of her artists.

Plus, she asked me to speak to her students at SVA a while back. And those who know me know I love to talk about illustration. I was very happy.

Have a good weekend,

f.

Saw this on your secret Conceptart haunt, and it’s probably my favorite piece of yours. Those bloated sharks are just awesome. Great color, too.

I’m working on one for SooJin right now, Frank. She’s the best.

The final art on this piece is really, really, really awesome. I hope you will be entering this one in some competitions.

I love that you’ve found a reason to draw one of those cool deep sea helmets. beautiful syncopated cord thingy. its aaall good. its a pleasure to look at.

I too love talking about illustration to others. Well at least my experience for the short two years I’ve been doing this. Thanks for sharing. You are very inspirational.

dammit all. when I see these pieces from you I’m reminded why I am largely not successful… you got MAD skillzzzzzzzzzz that I and many others don’t possess.
always a pleasure coming to your site.

Great image as always.
I love the format and the way you cropped those sharks…the dark one in the forground..wow it really gives depth to the image.
Great colors too…you rock!

I love the texture on the sharks, the stark color contrast and the exaggerated scale.

Another self-serving link to my blog (but seriously, I think this one is even more successful than the last one):

My new work has already resulted in an unsolicited gig from a nationally distributed magazine ( a certain children’s magazine named for a famous kid focused Cable channel) , so I’m really feeling good about this new direction.

I hope this isn’t invasive, to post this on your blog, but I admire what you do and really value your opinion.
