The Dark Knight

Hello

I’ve been super busy lately so here’s yet another short but sweet blog entry. I promise a more dense entry in the near future!

Last week I got a call from Max Bode at the New Yorker asking if I had time to do a quick piece for them.

I told him I wouldn’t be able to do it, because I already had two other deadlines on the Wednesday he needed the piece. Then he told me the subject: The Dark Knight.

Illustration of Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight, with Batman in profile behind him, created for The New Yorker.
Illustration of Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight, rendered in stark black and white with a smeared red mouth, contrasted against Batman’s silhouetted profile. Created as a film review illustration for The New Yorker, the image emphasizes psychological tension and moral opposition rather than action.

That was worth staying up all night for. I had a lot of fun drawing this; I got to be a little moodier and playful with my lines because of the tone of the film.

I decided to focus on Heath Ledger’s Joker which is the draw to this film. All the reviews and video clips I’ve seen allude to how dark and terrifying his performance is, so that’s what I was trying to go for in the sketches.

Here are my sketches and the final, which is in this week’s issue with the controversial Barry Blitt cover.

Join me again next week, same bat-time, same bat-channel! (I couldn’t resist)

Very cool. I admire your sketches quite a bit. I am an illustration major and I been looking at your blog to help me learn. Thanks for putting up so much info on your work.

Phil

I really like the directness of the piece. The middle image of your comps is striking though, really caught my eye first. Thanks for posting this Frank.

Is there any way to get a poster of this amazing work? I would also like to know if the sketches are available for purchase also. They are beautiful pieces

sweet stuff Frank, I love how you have the ability to change your style up a bit especially with your line work. I most enjoy the very painterly feeling overall with this next to your usual straight up comic booky feel. Either way its great! Did you see the movie yet?

Since a few people have asked me for this as a desktop wallpaper, I’ll put out a larger version on next Monday’s blog. Check back then, I’m thinking of only leaving it up for a week.
