What’s Your Vector, Victor?

Hi,

A few weeks ago I did three half-page illustrations for Best Life Magazine on the topic of “how to be a better dad.”

About a week after I turned them in I got a call from the Art Director saying they had expanded the article into more of a feature and wanted a full page illustration on the topic.

We went back and forth on concepts for a while before deciding to do the full page about “Parking Lot Rules,” which is a phrase every good father will say to his son or daughter to let them know to stand close by his side.

I drew the car in the background in Adobe Illustrator, my most ambitious foray into using vectors to date. As far as experiments go, I kinda like it and hope to learn more.

Hey Frank,
I think it works really well, mainly because the feeling of the cars and the colors and the perspective are all very reminiscent of what life as a child was like. Also the vector work fits like a charm.

Very nice design element, Frank- but I hope you don’t get seduced by vectors! (Nice ‘Airplane’ quote, by the way)

After all, what makes your work so distinctive is the inimitable quality of your line.

Peace,
Kyle

Frank….you impress once again…..I especially love that disco scene below. Groovy!!! A note on Adobe Illustrator: I don’t know if you knew..but there is actually a neat way to vectorize your drawings with a click of a button. After you scan in your inks, you import it into photoshop…adjust the levels like you normally would so that the lines are nice and black…then save it as a jpeg (or tiff or PS file). Open up illustrator, open the saved image….adjust the document size so it fits the format properly….go to “Select > All”….and then hit the “Live Trace” Button……voila..entire ink drawing is vectorized …and you can either continue in illustrator or import it back into Photoshop to work with much crisper lines. If you import it back to Photoshop, however, you will need to bump up the resolution before rasterizing the image. Illustrator CS2 and 3 are also the only ones who have the Live Trace option.
Hope it works for yah buddy and keep crankin’ that goodness…Inspirado all the way!!
